Preparing for Surgery

If you’re like most patients, you’re excited and maybe a little nervous. Your doctor and staff will go over specific instructions with you, but here are some common reminders.

The Weeks Before

  • During the last 2 weeks before surgery, your diet should be what we call the “Modified Meal Replacement Program”. This means that you have only a protein drink (or bar) for breakfast and lunch, and dinner is a small low-carb meal. This low-calorie and low-carb plan helps your liver shrink so that it is less likely to cause problems during your surgery. Your dieticians can give you detailed information about the protein drinks and examples of good dinner choices.
  • Stop taking any herbal remedies 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Don’t take aspirin for at least one week before your surgery.
  • If you take Motrin, Advil, Naprosyn or similar pain medications, avoid these for three days before surgery. Tylenol is okay.
  • If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, your surgeon will discuss specific instructions with you.
  • Obtain all the recommended supplements and practice taking them before surgery. We recommend that you use chewable supplements during the first 6-8 weeks after surgery, so this should be the type of supplement you have on hand.

The Day Before

  • Eat lightly. If you feel you must have a big “last meal,” please do so at least 72 hours before the operation. Your stomach must be empty at the time you go under anesthesia, and the less stuff you have in your intestines, the easier (and safer) your procedure will be.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before your surgery, except sips of water as required for your approved medications.

That Morning

  • Take your usual morning medications (not herbal pills or pain relievers) using small sips of water.
  • A bowel prep (enema) is not required prior to surgery.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Leave jewelry and other valuables at home.
  • Contact lenses cannot be worn during surgery.

Staying Overnight? Don’t Forget to Pack:

  • Comfortable pajamas (not too fancy as they could be stained)
  • Socks or slippers
  • Toothbrush and related items
  • Glasses (if you wear them)
  • Laptop, books, music, other entertainment
  • Charger for any of your electronics
  • CPAP machine (if you use one, to be used after surgery)
