New Dimensions Weight Loss Surgery receives renewal as Bariatric Center of Excellence from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
(San Antonio) — New Dimensions Weight Loss Surgery has received renewed status as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The ASMBS is the largest society in the world dedicated to bariatric surgery with a vision to improve public health by lessening the burden of the disease of obesity.
New Dimensions Weight Loss Surgery is the first and most experienced bariatric practice in San Antonio. Dr.’s John Pilcher, Lloyd Stegemann and Dana Reiss offer the Roux-En-Y gastric bypass, REALIZE adjustable gastric band and vertical sleeve gastrectomy as surgical options for overweight and obese patients. The practice is also adding a medical weight loss component with the addition of Dr. Brian Sabowitz, the first Bariatrician in San Antonio, who joined New Dimensions Weight Loss Surgery in August.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, about 15 million people in the United States have morbid obesity, yet only 1% of the clinically eligible population is being treated for morbid obesity through bariatric surgery. Conservative estimates list the cost of obesity in the United States at $117 billion each year. Closer to home, a January 2009 study from the Texas Health Institute, estimates the Bexar county population with a Body Mass Index of greater than 30 to be over 350,000 and expected to double by 2040.

New Dimensions Weight Loss Surgery today announced that all of its surgeons ( Dr. John Pilcher, Dr. Dana Reiss and Dr. Lloyd Stegemann) were named “Top Doctors” in Scene in SA Monthly magazine’s third annual survey of San Antonio’s top doctors.
Magazine staff sent surveys to 3,500 practicing doctors in San Antonio, asking them to recommend to whom they would refer their friends, family and patients. The magazine received an excellent return rate that included more than 800 doctors and medical personnel. From the responses received, the magazine developed the list of “San Antonio’s Top Doctors” which appeared in its November 2007 issue.
“Being recognized as the city’s best surgeons by our peers is extremely rewarding, particularly in a city with so many excellent doctors,” said Dr. John Pilcher, president of New Dimensions Weight Loss Surgery. “We have a long and successful history with our bariatric and general surgery patients here in San Antonio, and we are committed to serving this community for years to come.”

Magazine staff mailed 3,500 surveys to local doctors to learn to whom those doctors would refer a member of their own family or their own patients in 23-plus specialty areas, including general practice and specialty practices. From the responses received, the magazine developed the list of “San Antonio’s Top Doctors” which appeared in its December 2005 issue.
